You may notice that in this and my other podcasts as well as my commentaries, I spend a fair amount of time talking about emotions and energy. Part of that could be because the older I get, the more obvious it is that no human or animal possess an infinite amount of energy no matter hyper we may be. Additionally, though, in this era of concerns about weight gain and the importance of exercise, it’s easy to forget that the brain and basic resting organ functions–heart, liver, lungs, etc.–use about 2/3 of our total energy supply. When the activity level of these increases in response to fear and anxiety, their energy consumption increases accordingly. Consequently, it’s easy to see how once we allow ourselves to catastrophize, we don’t have the energy to do much else.
