As I was editing this podcast, it hit me that the gift of laughter is another reason why I like the species-specific parental model for our relationship with domestic animals instead of a peer-based reward/punishment competitive one. That said, I can see why some prefer the latter because, as with kids, animal parenting often involves acting more relaxed, confident, and even happy when we’d rather be glum. It’s so much easier to see it as their job to make us happy.
And yet, when we summon the courage to do that—remember courage from last week’s podcast?—the benefits may make any effort more than worthwhile.
