Surreal: very strange or unusual : having the quality of a dream. This podcast describes what struck me as a surreal event at the veterinary clinic, and the thoughts it triggered about the nature of the human-animal bond. It also raised questions about the degree of human and animal consciousness necessary for a quality bilateral connection to exist. If our animals looked at us with that same glazed there-but-not-there expression that we often wear when the bulk of our minds focus on our computer, notepad, or phone screens, what would we think? I suspect that many of us would fear the animal had brain problems.
When I was a kid, my mom would joke that I had my head in the clouds when I donned that blank expression. Today it’s more likely that the minds of those who look that way dwell in The Cloud. But relative to the bond, is there room for the animal in there too?
