This podcast owes a lot to Josh Gabbatiss’s article on rewilding and the conservation variation on that theme. The American media and public response to this concept ran true to form: reactive and emotional. The response of the scientific community was more thoughtful, but not universally supportive.
But not to fear. No one proposes sending a thundering herd of elephants up my or anyone’s driveway. (Except for those thundering up driveways they’ve always thundered up in their native environments.) Not even to save the elephants or any animals in equally dire straights.
Whether we agree with the solutions proposed, the willingness of scientists from diverse backgrounds to work together in an attempt to save the environment and the animals living on it represents a major step forward. For increasing numbers of species, more of the same approaches is no longer enough. It’s killing them.
