Do you worry about how many friends you have? Or do you boast about that number? These are some of the questions that popped into my head as I read about anthropologist and evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar’s social brain hypothesis. I easily can appreciate the challenges created when the brain’s capacity for human friendships collides with the world of social media. Not to mention all those politicians claiming to be our best friends forever.
But another batch of questions with their own challenges also came to mind.
What about companion dogs? How many true friends can a dog have? How many acquaintances? Does Dunbar’s number hold true for pet dogs too?
